History of the Trust
The Henry Martyn Trust was set up in 1881 in memory of Henry Martyn, the brilliant Cambridge graduate who worked in Asia and the Middle East involved in the translating of the New Testament into three languages. Since that time there have been many ongoing missionary ventures from Cambridge.
Conditions of Bursary

1.      The Trust makes available small bursaries each calendar year for those under the age of forty with personal Cambridge links, who seek to be involved in short-term, cross-cultural, Christian mission in the non-western world. This will assist suitable individuals to visit a country overseas and to participate in the life and work of the local church. The Trustees anticipate that such visits will involve close co-operation with established mission agencies and/or the development of existing links between local churches in this country and overseas.
2.      In cases where the detailed arrangements for the visit are to be made in collaboration with a specific mission agency, the candidates must be prepared to undergo orientation and de-briefing arrangements required by that agency.
3.      The Trustees are aware that future leaders of the Church will profit from experience of the Church in another culture. To this end, applicants from ordinands, theological students, younger clergy and lay church leaders will be welcomed, as well as those who will seek to make longer term commitments to world-wide mission.
4. The Trust’s policy is to only give one bursary per applicant.
Requirements.
1.      Each applicant will be required to submit a statement outlining the aims and reasons for the proposed visit. The full details of their proposed expenditure must be submitted. They must also be prepared to make a realistic contribution towards the cost of the visit from their own resources.
2.      The successful applicants will be required, on their return, to submit a written report to the Trustees, summarising the outcome of their visit and will be required to send it to the church leader to whom they are accountable. In addition they will be asked how they are planning to follow up their visit by a presentation to their church/college/fellowship group.
3.      Applications requested from Sue Anderson and completed applications for bursaries should be submitted no later than 15th May 2012 to Sue Anderson at the above address.

An extract from  students’ reports on the summer mission:

“I would definitely say that this has been a very formative time in my life. My experiences this summer leave me with a much better appreciation for what I have at home, both spiritually and materially.”

“It was a joy to be involved in a lot of different activities. There were lots of opportunities to teach the Bible in a variety of settings: preaching in church services and youth meetings, running seminars for young people on relationships and running after school clubs for children.”

“I think I will live differently in terms of having a widened perspective of what poverty means and the different types of aid required in different circumstances.”
